About Hyder Ali

Hyder Ali was the most brave and gallant fighter, who was the founder of Mysore. Even though Hyder Ali was illiterate he was very bold, hard working, shrewd, and had some of the best qualities of a leader and best military ruler. Even though Hyder’s father was killed in a battle, he and his brother joined the army.

In 1749 he became the best powerful military leader after he won the battle of Devanahalli, in Mysore. In fact the existing leader of Mysore was very much pleased with Hyder’s bravery and he made him the commander in chief in his army. After he was made the commander in chief, Hyder Ali won most of the battles.

Hyder Ali was one of the most able rulers, who brought about many reforms in the general administration, religions etc. Even though he himself was a Muslim, he brought about religious harmony and tolerance among all. He minted coins which featured both Hindu and Muslim deities, which shows his tolerance towards all religions. In fact the military and administrative reforms that he made was done keeping in mind about the interest of both the subjects and the kingdom. For such a mindset of his, Hyder Ali was loved by all.

The death of Hyder Ali during 1782 was a huge event at South India. The death of him was kept a secret until Tipu Sultan arrived. After the death of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan took over charge of Mysore.

Whenever someone thinks of Bengaluru and Mysore, the name of Tipu Sultan will inevitably arise. In fact Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and Bengaluru are synonymous. He was one of the most talented, enlightened monarchs who rule bravely. When the British started to establish their territory in the south, the Sultan along with the Nizam and with the Marhattas put up a brave fight.

The life of Tipu Sultan was noble and it was full of chivalry. He was also a great administrator and reformer like his father. It was due to Tipu Sultan’s powerful administrative reforms, Mysore became one of the most prosperous states in the east and a powerful province of the South. Tipu Sultan fought against all odds and laid his own life for the benefit of the state.

Thus the formation of the state of Mysore was due to the fierce battle which was fought by father and son duo. In the formation of present day Mysore, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and Bengaluru have a very great importance.
